Theraplay
A child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement.
Theraplay
Theraplay is a child and family therapy approach that focuses on enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust, and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of healthy interaction between parent and child, and is personal, physical, and fun. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge.
Theraplay sessions create an active, emotional connection between the child and parent or caregiver, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive and rewarding. In treatment, the therapist guides the parent and child through playful, fun games, developmentally challenging activities, and tender, nurturing activities.
The very act of engaging each other in this way helps the parent regulate the child's behavior and communicate love, joy, and safety to the child. It helps the child feel secure, cared for, connected and worthy.
The Four Dimensions of Theraplay
Structure
Structure activities help the child feel safe and secure by providing clear organization and rules. These activities help children learn that their world is predictable and that they can rely on their caregivers for guidance and protection.
Engagement
Engagement activities are designed to create a connection between the parent and child through playful, attuned interactions. These activities help the child experience being seen, heard, and enjoyed, building a sense of self-worth and connection.
Nurture
Nurture activities involve caring touch and soothing interactions that help the child feel valued, cared for, and worthy of love. These activities help children develop a sense that they are lovable and that their needs for comfort and care will be met.
Challenge
Challenge activities encourage the child's growth, self-confidence, and sense of competence. These activities help children take small risks, try new things, and experience success, all with the support and encouragement of their caregiver.
